Geology Professor Featured in Science News
The work of Daniel Hummer, Assistant Professor of Geology, is featured in a current article of 'Science News.' Hummer and his collaborators have used statistical methods normally used for ecological studies to predict the existence of over 140 undiscovered minerals containing the crucial element carbon. A worldwide hunt for these "missing" minerals, dubbed the 'Carbon Mineral Challenge', is now underway with Hummer as principle investigator. To date, six minerals previously unknown to science have already been found.

NEW CENTER TO PROMOTE AQUACULTURE
Stepping into SIU’s blossoming new aquaculture center is to see both the future and past of aquatic studies at the university.In the rows of new tanks and seemingly miles of new piping, already in use to some extent, one sees the long-standing tradition of aquaculture research at SIU. And in a massive space on one end of the room, which will one day hold an 8,000-gallon aquarium, one sees the future.
